Hooghly district is an agricultural belt and Serampore is a sub-divisional town in this district. Harmony between religion and culture is one of its defining features. Serampore came into being after the union of Gobindapur, Sripur and Mohanpur.
The town is known for temples, mosques and churches. With the arrival of William Carey on 10 January 1800, Serampore witnessed a remarkable growth of education, printing and culture.
